# Leagues & Seasons

A **league** is an optional layer on top of your matches. On its own, each competition produces its own result. A league groups a run of them and works out a **season standing** from their results, so you can run a winter series, a club championship, or a monthly ladder without re-entering anything.

You build leagues under **Leagues** in the club admin menu. One match can count toward more than one league (a club championship *and* a regional series, say), and adding a match to a league never changes the match itself.

## Creating a league

From **Leagues**, choose **New league** and fill in:

* **Name** members will see at the top of the standings.
* **Start and end dates** (optional), for your own reference.
* **Discipline** (optional). Pin the league to one of your disciplines to keep the maths comparable and so only matches of that discipline can be added. Leave it blank to allow any.
* **The counting rule** (below).

You add the matches after the league is created.

## How the season is scored

Pick the **counting rule** that suits your series:

* **Add every match** — the straight total of all the matches. Best when everyone shoots every round.
* **Best N count** — only each member's best N matches count. Set N to, say, 10 for a *best 10 of 13* season.
* **Drop the worst N** — count everything except each member's lowest N rounds.
* **Average percentage** — the mean of a member's per-match percentages, which evens out attendance.
* **Season plus a weighted finale** — the season counts for part of the total and a match you mark as the finale counts for the rest (you choose the split).

{% hint style="info" %}
**Best N count** and **drop the worst N** are the usual choice for club leagues. A member who can't make every round isn't punished for it, and one bad day is forgiven. The standings show **which** matches counted for each person, so it's transparent.
{% endhint %}

## Adding and removing matches

Open the league and use **Add match** to attach any of your matches (when the league is pinned to a discipline, only that discipline's matches are offered). A match can be attached before it's finished. Its results feed the standing as soon as they exist.

**Remove** takes a match back out of the league. The match and its own results are untouched.

For a **season plus a weighted finale** league, use **Make finale** on the match that is the finale, so its weighting is applied.

## Reading the standings

Standings are worked out **separately for each division**, newest season first. Each row shows the competitor, their **season total**, and, for best-N and drop-worst leagues, a **counted** column (for example *10 of 13*) so members can see exactly how many of their matches were used.

The season total is in whatever currency the matches produced: a **percentage** for disciplines scored that way (so a season is a sum or average of percentages), or **points** otherwise. Members carry across matches by their account, so the same person is tracked from round to round. Guests are matched on the name entered.

{% hint style="info" %}
A league should ladder a comparable currency, so it's best to keep a league to a single discipline. Pinning the **Discipline** when you create it does this for you.
{% endhint %}

## When standings update

Standings rebuild automatically whenever a match's scores change, so a correction on the day flows through to the season table on its own. If you've just added several matches and want to see the result immediately, use **Recompute** on the league to rebuild it now.

## What members see

Any signed-in member can view the league standings. On a match's **results** page, a **Counts toward** link shows the seasons that match feeds, so members can jump from a single match to the running league table. Closing a league (from **Edit**) tidies it away once the season is over; the standings stay visible either way.
